Withdrawl of the Public Health Goal for Uranium

In December 31, 1997, in accordance with Health and Safety Code, Section 116365 (California Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996, SB 1307, Calderon/Sher), the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) adopted 27 Public Health Goals (PHGs) for chemicals in drinking water. PHGs describe concentrations of contaminants at which adverse health effects would not be expected to occur, even over a lifetime of exposure. PHGs represent non-mandatory goals based solely on public health considerations, and are developed based on the best available data in the scientific literature.

OEHHA has since received additional information on uranium and is in the process of reviewing the relevant scientific data in order to propose a revised PHG. Based on the current review of the new information, OEHHA hereby withdraws the previously established PHG for uranium of 2 picocuries per liter of water, and will develop and adopt a new PHG in accordance to Health and Safety Code, Section 116365.
